  • Management
  • Mentors dilemna, very hard to simultaneously criticise someones work + motivate them because criticism can crash a young persons confidence
  • Shit sandwich doesn’t work, as the 3 elements aren’t related → disgenuine
  • Reports ask ‘does this person who has power over my life think i’m incompetent’
  • wise feedback - give criticism, but with clear + transparent statement about the reason they’re giving that feedback.
  • social standing - link between adherence to instructions and amount of status/respect used/portrayed by authority figure eg ‘Think, Don’t Smoke’ campaign failed, vs ‘Truth’ which portrayed smoking execs lying for sales.
    1. ask, don’t tell
    2. honor young persons status e.g. point out their competence/expertise
    3. validate whatever negative experiences young people may have had
    4. presume agency
  • mentor mindset -
    • maintain high standards
    • get in the details + question
    • supportive, when requested
    • don’t grant status, clear a path for earning it
    • choice of style comes from your belief in what your teammate/colleague can achieve
    • ‘enforcer’ mindset, if she was high performer, she wouldn’t need support.
    • ‘protector’ mindset, if she’s sensitive , she can’t handle the pressure.
  • mirroring - repeat last 3 words they say, turn it into a question - show you listen, and makes them expand on their thoughts
  • purpose - give a sense of purpose - broad not narrow. Mix of motives. (eg contribute to world and have respected + meaningful features. don’t cause anxiety.
  • Belonging - give belief about the possibility of change + improvement
